Mental Health isn’t just the absence of mental illness.[4] It exists on a spectrum and can look different for different individuals.[4] It is a feeling of well-being that helps people tackle stress, perform well at school and work, realise their potential, seek meaningful relationships, make healthy decisions, and contribute to the community at large.[4]
It aids in living life to the fullest, with all its highs and lows. Mental Health affects how an individual thinks, behaves, feels and interacts with others.[5] Various biological, social and psychological factors can affect a person’s mental health. Mental Health is a human right.
Mental Health is essential to overall well-being, but is it as important as physical health?
The simple answer is: Yes.
In fact, experts have questioned if there is such a divide at all. Let’s delve a little deeper.
What does the word ‘emotion’ mean to you?
Something that purely resides in your mind? Something you should push away or ‘think’ your way out of?
The answer to both, is- No. Your body feels various emotions.[6]
Not convinced?
Answer the following questions:
Have you ever [7]:
Sat across your crush and FELT those butterflies in your stomach?
Seen a sad movie and FELT heavy in the chest?
FELT heartbroken?
We reckon, your answer to all the above is- Yes.
It’s no surprise. Your mind and body are intricately connected. They influence each other. It is a two-way street. They ‘talk’ to each other in a silent symphony. When the balance goes askew, it’s like being rudely shaken awake from a reverie.
Many mental health conditions show physical symptoms. Suppressing emotions can increase risk for illnesses, including cancer.[7] Physical health issues can give rise to mental health problems as well.
Simply put, your physical health affects your mental health AND your mental health affects your physical health.[6]
More specifically[8]:
Depression has been associated with heart disease, asthma, diabetes, arthritis, cancer, among others, and
Schizophrenia, to a higher risk for heart and respiratory issues.
That is how much mental and physical health impact each other.
